Abstract

This study examines the socioeconomic factors influencing the choice of delivery place among mothers residing in peri-urban areas of District Quetta, Balochistan. Maternal health outcomes in the region remain a critical concern, often shaped by disparities in education, income, cultural norms, and access to healthcare services. The problem addressed in this research is the persistent preference for home-based deliveries despite the availability of institutional healthcare facilities. The purpose of the study is to explore how socioeconomic determinants influence maternal decision-making regarding delivery location. A qualitative research design was employed, involving in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with mothers, healthcare providers, and community members. The findings reveal that low maternal education, financial constraints, limited awareness of maternal health services, and traditional beliefs significantly contribute to home deliveries. Additionally, barriers such as distance to health facilities, lack of transportation, and inadequate healthcare infrastructure further discourage institutional deliveries. The role of family influence, particularly male decision-makers, also emerged as a critical factor shaping choices. The study concludes that improving maternal health outcomes in peri-urban Quetta requires a multifaceted approach, including enhancing female education, promoting awareness about safe delivery practices, strengthening healthcare infrastructure, and addressing socio-cultural barriers. Policymakers should prioritize community-based interventions and targeted health education programs to encourage institutional deliveries and reduce maternal risks. These findings align with existing studies highlighting the impact of socioeconomic and cultural factors on maternal healthcare utilization in Balochistan.
